On the Tragedy of Love in Wen Cheng from a Spatial Perspective
Wen Cheng tells the story of Lin Xiangfu who went south to"Wen Cheng"in search of his wife. The novel reproduces Yu Hua's warm narrative and reveals the author's intention to construct space. In novels, love tragedy is one of the important narrative themes. The novel intuitively presents the different social(family)spaces in which Lin Xiangfu and Ji Xiaomei live, and the vastly dif-ferent growth environments conceal the source of their tragic love story;at the same time, the two of them bear their own psychological space of pain, and the departure of Ji Xiaomei and Lin Xiangfu's deliberate search and avoidance present the torment that this des-tined love brings to them.In addition,in physical space, the author depicts a"Wen Cheng"that is always misaligned between two people. In a sense, these triple spaces dominate the plot of the novel, and the spatial barriers ultimately lead to a tragic love story be-tween the two.
