Dynamic Development of EFL Learners'Written Discourse Cohesion Across Different Proficiency Levels
This study aims to explore the developmental pathways of English majors with different language proficiency levels in terms of cohesion. The research spanned four semesters and collected timed writing texts from 46 English major students. The author utilized the cohesion measurement tool Coh-Metrix 3.0 and selected four specific metrics:Latent Semantic Analysis, causal connec-tives,logical connectives, and temporal connectives. The research findings indicated that the developmental trends of logical connec-tives in low and high proficiency groups were relatively synchronous, while there was an intersecting development in latent semantic analysis and causal connectives. However, there were no significant differences in the cohesion mean scores among students with dif-ferent language proficiency levels. The trends in students'writing cohesion are influenced by factors such as individual learners, task characteristics, and language environment. This paper aims to expand and complement the research on cohesion in second language writing and provide insights for second language writing instruction.
