A Study on the Use of Modal Verbs in Diplomatic Discourse Translation from the Perspective of Interpersonal Function
The use of modal verbs in diplomatic discourse translation is closely linked to the fulfillment of interpersonal meaning.This paper examines the use of modal verbs and their types and values in diplomatic discourse translation from the perspective of in-terpersonal function,and compares the characteristics of the use of modal verbs in Xi Jinping's diplomatic discourse in the original text and the translated text,so as to analyse how the use of modal verbs constructs interpersonal meanings and their effects in diplo-matic discourse translation.It is found that the process of English translation of modal verbs in diplomatic discourse undergoes active and varied transformations by increasing the use of dynamic and epistemic modal verbs,and favoring the use of modal verbs with medium values.The rational use of different types of modal verbs can help build harmonious interpersonal and international relations,accurately convey China's intentions,improve the efficiency of communication,promote cooperation between the two sides,and achieve the expected diplomatic effects.
