Research Summary of Cantonese Dialect Research in Beihai
Beihai serves as the primary hub for Cantonese dialect in Guangxi,boasting a substantial population of Cantonese speakers.However,for an extended period,research on Cantonese has predominantly focused on the Pearl River Delta region,partic-ularly Guangzhou.Consequently,studies on Cantonese outside this area have often been overlooked by researchers.This situation be-gan to change in the 1980s when there was a significant advancement in Cantonese dialect research.Researchers gradually expanded their investigations beyond the Pearl River Delta and started paying attention to neglected regions like Guangxi's Beihai with its dis-tinctive variant of Cantonese.As one of the prominent representatives of Cantonese in Guangxi,Beihai's dialect has garnered consider-able interest and witnessed a surge in scholarly exploration.This paper primarily reviews and summarizes the research findings con-cerning Beihai's Cantonese dialect while identifying shortcomings within the research process and offering suggestions for improve-ment.The aim is to provide valuable insights for future studies on Cantonese dialect.
