The effect of steel slag on the growth and physiology of Chlorella was investigated in a photobioreactor in which microalgae were cultured in sewage. The results show that steel slag has effect of"low promotion and high inhibi-tion"on the growth of microalgae. The leaching concentration of 20 mg/L Ca2+from 1 g/L steel slag is the best promo-tion concentration for the growth of Chlorella. The biomass of microalgae is 1.3 times that of the control group,chloro-phyll a and chlorophyll b increased by 29%and 20%,respectively,and oxygen production is enhanced.More than 2 g/L of steel slag inhibites the growth of microalgae.Correlation analysis shows that Ca2+and pH are the key factors for the growth of microalgae. When calcium ion is less than 30 mg/L and pH is 9~10,the growth of microalgae is stimulated, while excessive calcium ion would damage chlorophyll a.The concentration of heavy metal ions leached from steel slag doesn't exceed the sewage discharge standard and surface water environmental quality standard. It not only realizes the re-cycling of metal elements in steel slag, but also provides a cooperative carbon sequestration method of steel slag and mi-croalgae.
