A Study on the Uniforms of Chinese and Dutch Soldiers during Zheng Chenggong's Struggle to Drive out the Dutch and Recover Taiwan
Military costume is an extremely important content in the study of the history of Chinese costume, and from ancient times to modern times, soldier costume reflects the development level of productive forces, some forms of land and sea tactics,as well as soldiers'spiritual outlook and so on.In the 17th century, during the largest war between China and the Dutch, the two sides wore helmets in the land battle,in this era of firearms, the appearance of this kind of costume was unexpected,so it is necessary and important to study;Based on the original Chinese and Dutch materials and subsequent documents,it is found that in Zheng Chenggong's attempt to Drive out the Dutch and Recover Taiwan, the Chinese were dominated by hoplites, while the Dutch were dominated by light infantry. In the naval battle, they both were developing in the direction of light and short clothing, but Zheng's navy actually used bows and arrows to fight the enemy, indicating that the proportion of soldiers in armors was still very high. The Chinese military uniforms changed little after the war,and continued to do so until the late 18th century. In the West, represented by the Netherlands, with the deepening of national centralization, military uniforms began to be formalized. After the 18th century, the light cavalry almost no longer wore helmets and customary armors, and in the cooperation of spearmen and musketeers the armors almost disappeared. All in all,the uniforms of the opposing Dutch and Chinese soldiers in the war was markedly different, although it had little effect on the outcome of the battle. The relatively few wars in China from the 17th to 19th centuries delayed the transformation of military forces on all sides, and became an important reason why China was lagged behind the West in the competition between China and the West from the 15th to 19th centuries.
