Entrepreneurship is an important force in regional development. It is of great significance to explore how to improve regional entrepreneurial activity by optimizing the entrepreneurial ecosystem.Based on the theory of entrepreneurial ecosystem, this paper uses fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis(fsQCA)on data from 74 prefecture-level cities in China to explore how the elements of entrepreneurial ecosystem jointly affect regional entrepreneurial activity.Empirical estimates indicate that:First,a single factor cannot independently constitute the necessary conditions for high and non-high entrepreneurial activity in the city.Second, three distinct entrepreneurial ecosystems, namely market-finance-human resource-driven,finance-network-driven,and market-government-network-driven,generate high entrepreneurial activity.Third, there are four types of entrepreneurial ecosystems recognized for generating non-high levels of entrepreneurial activity, and there is an asymmetric relationship with the entrepreneurial ecosystems that generate high entrepreneurial activity. The results provide a theoretical basis for different cities to optimize the entrepreneurial ecosystem and explore multiple paths to enhance urban entrepreneurial activity.
