The imaginative personality of the 19th century British romantic poet Byron, the tension between the social rebel and the emotional subject in his poetry,is deeply rooted in the historical soil of 20th century Chinese enlightenment and revolutionary poetics.Previous studies have been somewhat weak in studying the multidimensional image of Byron in modern and contemporary Chinese revolution. The Byron image in China has undergone stages such as the revolutionary trend in late Qing and early Republic, the individualistic enlightenment trend, and the mass-oriented leftist trend, and has manifested distinct image connotations of"gallant man","amala",and"romantic warrior".From the appropriation of the narrow connotations of the"gallant man"Byron image to the pioneering of the enlightenment stance with high-flying emotional subjectivity of the"amala"Byron image,to the real-life experiences of the emotional subject with individuality and revolutionary identity of the"romantic warrior"Byron image, has been assumed the function of an image symbol that intervenes in Chinese social reality. This study thus provides an insight into the multidimensional image of Byron in China, which is helpful in recreating the complex scene of the transformation of Byron's image and Chinese poetry modernity.
