Incidence of dental caries among school-age children in Pulan County,Tibet region and its correlation with body mass index
Objective To investigate the oral health status of school-age children in Pulan County,Tibet region, and to ana-lyze the relationship between their growth and oral health. Methods A total of 529 Tibetan primary and middle school students(300 males and 229 females)registered in Pulan County, were examined for caries and their height, weight and other physical param-eters were measured. The oral health indicators such as caries prevalence, caries mean, tooth loss rate and dental caries filling rate were analyzed, and the relationship between DMFs and body mass index(BMI)was studied by Spearman correlation analysis. Results The overall prevalence of caries of school-age children was as high as 75.99%,but the caries prevalence of 6-8 years old group(64.38%)was significantly lower than that of 9-11 years old group(82.82%)and 12-14 years old group(79.61%)(P<0.05);the caries mean was 3.18,and the caries mean of 9-11 years old group(4.14)was higher than that of 6-8 years old group(2.42)and 12-14 years old group(3.01),and the caries mean of boys(3.44)was higher than that of girls(2.83);18.53%of school-age children had tooth loss due to caries, and the incidence of tooth loss in boys(22.00%)was significantly higher than that in girls(13.97%)(P<0.05);the dental caries filling rate of this group was only 0.30%.Spearman correlation analysis showed that the DMFs was negatively correlated with body mass index(BMI)(r=-0.272,P<0.01).Conclusions The prevalence of caries in school-age children in Pulan County,Tibet region is significantly higher than the national average, but the treatment rate is extremely low.The poor oral health has a certain degree of negative impact on the growth and development of the children in this area.
