Simulation Study on Train Operation Mode of Double-height Container Handling Station
At present, most railway system of countries across the world implement the single-layer trans-portation of containers mainly 20 feet or 40 feet in height.Double-height container transportation refers to the means of railway transportation where a single flatbed is loaded with two 40-foot containers(2896mm in height)stacked one on top of another. The development of such transportation practice is relatively mature abroad, but there is no precedent for double-height container transportation on electrified rail lines in China, and the relevant technologies and standards are yet lacking. The Suxi Handling Station of the Jinyong Railway is the first double-height container handling station in China, which has certain explorative significance. The working efficiency of the container handling station is an important factor in the overall operation effi-ciency of a railway station.Current train operation modes of container handling stations have many issues,in-cluding excessive operation links, complicated procedures, long working time and high cost, and there is an ur-gent need to explore new operation modes. In order to improve the operating efficiency of Suxi double-height railway container handling station, the first of its kind in China,we proposed a"straight arrival-to-dispatch"mode on the basis of the traditional"shunting locomotive dispatch"mode, and built a FlexSim simulation model which covers all operations from the arrival and departure areas to the loading and unloading areas.By comprehensively considering the overall efficiency of the operating surface of the double-height railway container handling station composed of the el-ements such as train marshalling, arrival and departure lines, main locomotives, loading and unloading lines,ex-it lines, shunting locomotives, railway lines, and train stops, etc.,we set the relevant parameters and gave the evaluation indicators. In light of a number of important evaluation indicators affecting the train arrival and departure efficiency at the handling station, such as the average time between arrival and departure, the number of trains departed, and the volume of carriages departed,we compared the advantages and disadvantages of the two operation modes by analyzing the simulation data.According to the result, compared to the"straight arrival-to-dispatch"oper-ation mode, the"shunting locomotive dispatch"operation mode additionally requires the shunting locomo-tive,and one more uncoupling and coupling operation of the main locomotive, which increases the entire cost and time of operation.Through FlexSim simulation,it is further verified that the"straight arrival-to-dis-patch"operation mode has higher overall work efficiency and shorter working time than the"shunting loco-motive dispatch"operation mode in terms of average time between arrival and departure, the number of trains departed, and the volume of carriages departed. In the long run, the"straight arrival-to-dispatch"operation mode has obvious development advantages in the construction of high-speed railway container handling sta-tions.However,the"straight arrival-to-dispatch"operation mode has certain sticking points for promotion under the current railway regulations and systems, for example, the loading and unloading lines are not allowed in grid, and the distribution of existing stations cannot serve the planned routing of the main locomotive. These issues need to be solved through trial and error by more container handling terminals qualified for pilot-ing the"straight arrival-to-dispatch"operation mode before the mode can mature and be promoted to other stations.
