Painting is an art of metaphor, with its origin from primitive societies in China. The earliest metaphorical ex-pression in Chinese painting can be traced back to the late Paleolithic and early Neolithic periods when human cognition grad-ually matured, possessing advanced abilities for abstraction and generalization, thus laying the biological foundation for ap-pearance of metaphorical thinking. The emergence of artistic thought during the late Paleolithic era coincided with the forma-tion of human artistic metaphorical thinking.Limited by the primitive understanding and cognition of the world, early hu-mans often mistook disparate entities for identical ones, thus forming metaphor.Painting in the late Paleolithic era primarily involved depictions on bone and stone implements, with metaphors predominantly denoting labor practices. The engraved lines, decorations, and adornments served as metaphors representing the beliefs and aspirations associated with successful hunting during human labor activities, embodying a profound connection with the mysterious forces of nature. As the produc-tion abilities of humans progressed,so did the richness of painting types till the Neolithic era, with painted pottery decora-tion standing out as the most representative form.Neolithic paintings metaphorically conveyed the primal reverence for the sun, nature, reproduction, and the spiritual pursuit of power and authority. These expressions encapsulated the primitive hu-man desire for prosperity and the pursuit of a harmonious existence.
