The lost work Shi Quan(a book for interpretation of the words and sentences in Historical Records for proof-reading)is a non-mainstream research work on Historical Records written by Cheng Yizhi,a scholar of the late Ming Dynas-ty.Liu Ziwei's Preface to Shi Quan believes that Cheng Yizhi was an expert in Historical Records and Cheng's purpose in writing Shi Quan is to worry that some scholars"can not understand Historical Records deeply"and to put the bad style of study right at that time.Wu Ziyu's Preface to Shi Quan advocates a way of"original text deduced from existing texts"for literature interpretation, and explains the difficulty and uncertainty of text interpretation, and confirms the academic value of Shi Quan with the exposition of Cheng Yizhi's"thought of unification"in historical study. It can be seen from the missing texts of Shi Quan quoted in Shiji Shu Zheng(a book written for verifying the name of the object, distinguishing and solving the doubts, and making many corrections to the old notes in Historical Records)that Shi Quan is very rich in content and it gives detailed explanation from punctuation-verifying to words, sentence and writing style, which is very valuable for the exegesis of Historical Records. In addition,Shi Quan revises the texts, supplements and distinguishes the historical materi-als,and examines the historical facts, and it is indeed a masterpiece of examining and debating Historical Records.
