A Study of Chieftain Mu Zeng's Selected Works of Zhishanyunke
The Selected Works of Zhishanyunke is a poetic anthology by the regional chieftain Muzeng in the Ming Dynasty, compiled and edited by Chen Jiru with prefaces contributed by Dong Qichang and Chen Jiru.Despite its contemporary popularity, the anthology was banned during the Qing Dynasty under Emperor Qianlong due to verses celebrating the Ming Dynasty's victory over the Liao people. The extant Chongzhen edition contains 206 poems and 3 essays. The appearance of"Selected Poems"makes up for the incomplete situation of Selected Works of Zhishanyunke and shows Muzeng's unique literary distinction among the southwestern ethnic minorities. It also represents a significant cultural exchange between the frontier and central plains, promoting Han culture in the border regions.
