"Accelerating World"Presented in Overseas Poetry in the Late Qing Period
From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, with the acceleration of technology, competition and the impact of evolution, mankind overcame the obstacles of time and space and entered the era of accelerating development of global integration. The overseas poets in late Qing first observed and experienced the great changes in the concept of time and space, the pace of life,self-feeling,and self-identity.In terms of time, the"present"shrinks ever more quickly and is soon replaced by the next;trains and ships liberated people from the shackles of tradition, but again embedded in the strict time management. In terms of space, these overseas poets experienced the disconnection between social proximity and physical proximity, between social relevance and spatial proximity. In terms of self-perception and identity, while everything was caught up in a speed cycle of faster and faster, these poets had been less able to absorb what happened and experienced into their own life stories. In addition, those countries and regions lagged behind were controlled and exploited by countries and regions with speed and first-move advantage because of imbalance and inequality in the accelerating modern world.
