"Migrated Branches"and Narratives of Prestigious Families in Local Prefecture in Northern Dynasties:Clues from Two Nested Stone Tablets of the Zhang Clan of Nanyang
Migration means a spatial rupture with the old family and the emergence of a new starting point. It can easily distort and deform the family memories, and become a room for relating, forging,or"deliberately forgetting"one's family history. The Zhang family, who lived in Xianyuan, the south side of Zhongtiao Mountain, might be a real case that a Nanyang family migrated and continued to thrive in another place.Due to the accidental nature of inscriptions, two stones preserved this example, which presents the use of two surname places of origin or choronym,"Xi'e of Nanyang"and"Baishui of Nanyang",in surrounding areas.Furthermore,it shows the complexity of such narratives of the other"migrated branches"families.Compared with authenticity, the historical context behind the family's ancestral home and lineage narratives deserves more attention,as well as the collective perceptions and behaviors shaped by the context. It may trigger the thinking of the dynamics of change from medieval times to early modern times from the perspective of"family memory".
