SPRING AND AUTUMN(2020-2022)DIATOM COMPOSITION OF THE SURFACE SEDIMENTS FROM THE INTERTIDAL ZONE OF HAIMEN,NANTONG
The surface sediments collected from the intertidal zone of Haimen,Nantong,Jiangsu Province during the spring-and autumn-seasons from 2020 to 2022 were utilized to study the diatom composition, abundance and diversity in this region.A total of 56 species belonging to 23 genera of the diatoms were identified, mostly comprising eurythermal and widely distributed benthic marine species.Diatom abundance ranges from 4 850 to 7 389 cells/g,with a composite diversity index[H(s)]between 2.53 and 3.24.Cyclotella stylorum,Tryblioptychus cocconeiformis and Coscinodiscus radiatus are the common dominant species in both spring and autumn. In spring, the characteristic dominant species is Navicula marina, while in autumn, the characteristic dominant species are Coscinodiscus oculus-iridis,C.subtilis and Thalassiosira eccentrica.Comparing the sedimentary diatom records between spring and autumn,we found that the absolute abundance of diatoms in spring is slightly greater than that in autumn, possibly due to relatively higher solar insolation levels. The H(s)of diatoms in spring is slightly lower than in autumn, mainly because Navicula marina dominates in spring.Correlation analysis was conducted between the temperature, salinity, and nutrient data obtained from the intertidal zone in spring and autumn, and the representative dominant species of diatoms. It is inferred that the variations in temperature and salinity may be the primary factors influencing the species composition of diatoms in different seasons in this intertidal zone.
