Contributions and Limitations of Lin Yutang's Study of the Archaic Rhyme Groups of "Ge( 歌 ) Ge ( 戈 )Yu( 鱼 ) Yu( 虞 ) Mo(模)"
Lin Yutang proposed the viewpoint that "歌 and戈 are pronounced as long /ɑ:/ and 麻 is pronounced as short /ɑ/". This proposition was based on the phonetic evolution in the Indo-European language family and the transformations between vowel/stop-ending and nasal-ending rhymes in archaic Chinese. Based on historical linguistic principles, the phonetic alternation between archaic Chinese rhyme units, and evidence from Sanskrit-Chinese phonetic correspondences, Lin also proposed that during the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Wei dy-nasties, "鱼,虞 and模" rhyme group was pronounced as open /o/ (or closed /o/). Despite some limitations in his arguments, Lin's research shows originality in terms of research materials, methods, and conclusions. His research has provided a theoretical foundation for subsequent scholars to delve more profoundly into this subject and explore it further.
