An Investigation into Chen Xianzhang's Meditation Theory
Song and Ming Confucianism extended the Neo-Confucian category from the mind to the universe, which was undoubtedly the result of influence by Buddhism. In the early Ming Dynasty,Chen Xianzhang emphasized that the subject, through the means of meditation and cultivation, regarded all things in the universe as beings emanated from the mind to the outside world so as to seek a fitting category of"mind-reason"unity.However,Hu Juren and Luo Qinshun in the middle of the Ming Dynasty argued that Chen Xianzhang's learning was similar to Zen,which led later generations to misunderstand Chen Xianzhang's thought. Therefore,by investigating Chen Xianzhang's thought on meditation, tranquility, and quietude, his summarizing and reform of Zen Buddhism by means of poetry can reproduce his unique insights.
