A Study of Plant Decorative Patterns for Ancestral Halls in Wuyi Region
Virtue cultivation,blessings,and introduction of western elements are the three typical architectural plant patterns for decorating ancestral halls built in Wuyi from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China.By applying the theory of four aesthetic levels of artworks,this article analyzes the aesthetic connotation of virtue-cultivation themed plant patterns,explores the intrinsic relationship between traditional plant patterns and moral education functions of ancestral halls,and points out that localized decorative plant patterns expanded the scope of decoration patterns in terms of formal signifier and referent in Lingnan region,while western plant patterns belong to the aesthetic creation practice at the form signifier level.
