In spite of their differences in approaches to language and ultimate goals of linguistic inquiry,Systemic-Func-tional linguistics and Generative linguistics have divergences and confluences in pragmatics.Halliday's"grammar"deals with"the instantial aspect of semantics"of discourse in linguistic systems, with no place for pragmatics. But his analyti-cal framework has successfully incorporated insights from Conversation Analysis and Gricean pragmatics and touched upon other central topics in pragmatics.Chomsky's"syntax"focuses on abstract systems of rules, but his theory of"linguistic competence"involves the speaker's knowledge of appropriate language use and his reflections on"pragmatic compe-tence"have provided a theoretical concept for pragmatics.Their semiotic perspectives and reflections on language use have laid solid foundations for the"pragmatic turns"of their followers. In view of its profound impacts on such disciplines as discourse analysis, stylistics, and translation studies,Systemic-Functional pragmatic theory can be taken as an applied pragmatics;considering its foci on syntax-pragmatics relations and the semantics-pragmatics interface,Generative prag-matic theory can be characterized as a theoretical pragmatics. The two schools of linguistics have collaboratively contribu-ted to the development of theory and metatheory in contemporary pragmatics and have played important roles in the study of competence-performance connection and comprehensive analysis of language use.
