As the oldest publishing institution in China,the Commercial Press has played a crucial role in the dissemina-tion of knowledge and the promotion of cultural exchange between China and the West.This article analyzes the academic translation activities of the Commercial Press over its 127-year history,identifying four phases:the exploratory period(1897-1920),the developmental period(1921-1949),the adjustment period(1950-1977),and the prosperous period(1978-2024).Then the characteristics of academic translation by the Commercial Press are discussed from five aspects,i.e.,translation purpose,translators,translation content,translation methods and translation effects,to inspire the con-temporary academic translation practices.It is found that the academic translations of the Commercial Press closely align with the themes of their respective times and emphasize the intellectual depth of the original works.Moreover,the Com-mercial Press has witnessed and promoted the construction of China's modern academic system.
