This article aims to study the developmental trend of mass extinction research by analyzing citers'sentiments from the perspective of appraisal theory.Through burst detection analysis, the manually annotated appraisal resources whose frequencies surged at different periods during the past 36 years were detected. The results indicate that the distribution of appraisal resources can reveal the collective shifts of scientists'positive, neutral or negative sentiments, and the process of"negation of the negation"in scientific development. This study proves the value of Appraisal Theory in the study of citation sentiment analysis, and it has some implications for solving the problems in traditional citation analysis.
