A Retrospective Study on Jane Addams'Pacifism in Her Thinking and Practice
This paper reviews Jane Addams'ideals of pacifism from the origin and the realization of her treasured pacifist principle. The author points out that Addams'mentality originated from her family background, the religious tradition she was attached to,and the conviction of following the dictates of her consciences.Addams gained her insights from her personal life and the books she read.Through accurate observation, extensive reading, and profound reflection,Addams was endowed with power to free herself from the bondage of domestic trifles and the fetters of old customs imposing upon women in the age when Addams was born and growing.Ahead of her time,Addams was courageous enough to become the founder of Hull House, the reformer in Progressive Movement, and the pacifist against Spanish-American War and Philippine-American War.During the First World War,Addams was opposed to American government's decision of joining the war with firm statements as well as persistent action, and thus fell from grace. However,Addams held fast to her ideas of non-violence resistance and took her strong stand of a pacifist in spite of suffering the fall of her position from saint to villain in eyes of war hawks.Addams set a good example for other women as being independent and humanitarian in her era and in time of war.
