On Constitutive Rhetoric's Turn from Humanism to Posthumanism
This paper attempts to analyze the paradigm shift of constitutive rhetoric from humanism to posthumanism. It attempts to explore the vision, aim and principle of constitutive rhetoric in the present era of posthumanism. The discussion is conducted in the following three aspects:firstly, constitutive rhetoric should abandon the idea of human beings as the only rhetorical agent and accept the vision of rhetorical ecology, admitting the rhetorical agency of nonhuman actants;secondly, constitutive rhetoric should rethink the aim of taking persuasion as its major goal and give up the strong purpose of persuading the audience, and acknowledge the existence of distance and differences;and thirdly, constitutive rhetoric should reconsider the principle of taking human beings'rationality as the basis of study and go beyond the binary distinction of reason and feeling to rediscover the rhetorical energy of feeling by taking feeling itself as rhetorical agency. The purpose of this study is to prompt constitutive rhetoric to readapt itself to the present posthuman reality and academic context, and thus to gain new dynamism for sustainable development.
