Translation in the Chinese Military over the 75 Years since the Founding of the PRC:Achievements and Challenges
The past 75 years since the founding of the PRC have witnessed the development of translation in the Chinese military.Grown out of limited and spontaneous translation practice that was considered to be peripheral to military tasks,translation in the Chinese military has become more standardized,systematic and professional.The Chinese military has cultivated a considerable group of translators and interpreters tailored for military specialties,established professional translation units,set up a multilevel personnel training system covering multiple languages,delivered a wide range of military translation products,and initiated the theoretical studies in this respect.In the new era,those who work for translation in the Chinese military are bound to provide more professional and efficient language service for safeguarding China's sovereignty and security,protecting overseas national interests,promoting the building of a world-class military,enhancing international military cooperation and showing the best of China's armed forces to the world.Given the challenges presented by the expanded tasks in the new era,the Chinese military must enhance its endeavors related to translation by improving macro-management on capacity-building,optimizing distribution of resources,reinforcing professional development,and encouraging theoretical studies,with a view to providing a reliable linguistic support for building a world-class military.
