The Predictive Effects of Trait Emotional Intelligence and Emotion Regulation Strategies on University Students'L2 Learning Outcomes
While trait emotional intelligence and emotion regulation have significant impacts on L2 learning, their predictive effects on L2 learning outcomes remain unclear.Drawing on the EM-PATHIC S model and the process model of emotion regulation, the present study investigated the relationship between trait emotional intelligence, emotion regulation strategies, and L2 learning outcomes among 385 Chinese university students through a questionnaire survey.Interviews were also conducted to explore the reasons why trait emotional intelligence and emotion regula-tion strategies may predict L2 learning outcomes. Results revealed that trait emotional intelli-gence not only had a direct effect on L2 learning outcomes, but also indirectly predicted L2 learning outcomes through cognitive reappraisal.Trait emotional intelligence predicted expres-sive suppression, while expressive suppression did not mediate the relationship between trait emotional intelligence and L2 learning outcomes. The interviews showed that learning engage-ment,L2 learning emotions, and motivation were crucial in the path of"trait emotional intelli-gence → cognitive reappraisal → L2 learning outcomes".These findings provide implications for guiding learners to effectively use emotion regulation strategies.
