A Corpus Stylistic Exploration of Translators'Functional Styles
This study pioneers the exploration of using corpus data to investigate translators'function-al styles in literary translation.A translator's functional style refers to the idiosyncrasies that he/she shows when reconstructing the functional elements of literary works, such as thematic con-struction,characterization,and narrative construction. In literary translation research, exploring translators'functional styles helps establish a connection between linguistic description and its literary function, highlighting the impact of translators'linguistic choices on the reconstruction of literary features in translation.Using a corpus stylistic method, the study examines the recon-struction of the theme"Diasporic Chinese"in the four English translations of Lao She's Er Ma.The study finds significant differences among translators in the translation of thematic keywords, reconstruction of lexical chains, and reconstruction of semantic fields. The study also reveals that factors such as translators'backgrounds, motivations, preferences, interpretations of the source text, and patrons are important in shaping these translators'functional styles.Overall, this study effectively expands the scope and methodology of existing translator style research.
