Being Alive and Crazy:A Critique of I.B.Singer's Meshugah
"Crazy"sexual lives of Jewish Holocaust survivors are depicted in the novel Meshugah in a"crazy"style. The author of I.B.Singer intervenes in the story with sympathy, understanding, and even transforms himself into one of the characters, creating an intertextual relationship with the characters in the novel.Singer, who has always liked to gossip about Jewish Holocaust survi-vors,does not criticize the chaotic lives of Jewish survivors in this novel because at this time,he gains a new understanding and insight into the unconventional social behavior and psychological structure of Jewish survivors:They are both a group of survivors of the war and victims—yet both physically and mentally severely damaged, and unable to escape the haze of persecution and the Holocaust. In order to survive, they have to huddle together for warmth and encourage each other through sexual activities. For Jewish survivors, sex is not only a driving force and means of survival, but also a symbol of the survival of the Jewish people.
