Syntactic Complexity Features of Rhetorical Moves in Open Accessible Summaries in Lan-guage Studies
Open accessible summaries in language studies(OASIS)is an emerging genre of academic summaries that has been gradually adopted by various international journals of language re-search.OASIS has become one of the important means of disseminating knowledge in the field of language studies. To explore the syntactic features of rhetorical moves in this emerging genre,a corpus-based study was conducted. We first manually annotated the rhetorical moves of each text and then conducted quantitative analysis of the syntactic complexity features of these moves. The syntactic complexity indices employed include sentence length, nominalization, complex nominal, finite independent clause, and nonfinite independent clause. The results indi-cate significant differences in syntactic complexity among the rhetorical moves and point to a correspondence between specific rhetorical moves and different types of syntactically complex sentences.Overall, this study is beneficial in enriching our understanding of OASIS and pro-vides empirical evidence for OASIS writing instruction.
