The Effects of Student Perceptions of Teacher Enthusiasm on English Classroom Engage-ment:Based on Classifications of Regulatory Focus Types
Based on a questionnaire survey of 1915 non-English major students, this study used Clus-ter Analysis,One-way ANOVA and Macro PROCESS to investigate the effects of student percep-tions of teacher enthusiasm on English classroom engagement among students of different regu-latory focus types. The results show that students were divided into four types based on the inten-sity of promotional and preventional focus. They were full-out,aggressive,steady and passive types according to the features of their regulatory focus. In terms of teacher enthusiasm percep-tions,the full-out type is approximately equal to the aggressive type, which is more proactive than the steady and passive types.Regarding classroom engagement, the full-out type surpasses the aggressive type, which in turn exceeds the steady type that is approximately equal to the pas-sive type.Among the first three types, student perceptions of teacher enthusiasm made a positive linkage impact on cognitive and behavioral engagement via emotional engagement as the media-tor.The intensity of regulatory focus of the first three types moderated the association between student perceptions of teacher enthusiasm and classroom engagement. The research findings re-veal the impact mechanism of teacher enthusiasm perceptions on English classroom engagement of students with different regulatory focus types. These findings tend to provide theoretical guid-ance and empirical evidence for more effectively inspiring classroom engagement through teach-er enthusiasm perceptions from the perspective of regulatory focus type differences.
