An Exploration of Translation Strategies for Semantic Prosody in English Translations of Hong Lou Meng:Evidence From Perception Verbs
Translation is the process wherein the translator reproduces and recreates the original text in the target language.Semantic prosody plays a key role in establishing cross-linguistic equiva-lence and should be a primary concern for translators when conveying meaning in the target lan-guage text.Based on the Chinese-English parallel corpus of Hong Lou Meng and the British Na-tional Corpus, this study investigates alterations of semantic prosody in Chinese-English transla-tions of Hong Lou Meng and analyzes its functioning in translators'reproduction of implicit atti-tudinal meaning,so as to zoom in on translation strategies for semantic prosodies.Taking the Chinese perception verb daliang(打量)as an example, the study finds that translators commonly employ two strategies:retaining the original semantic prosodic equivalence and manipulating the semantic prosody. However,it is difficult to maintain the functional equivalence at the level of semantic prosody in translation. In most cases, translators opt to manipulate semantic prosody, avoid the original text's semantic prosody, and create semantic prosody clashes,in an attempt to convey the translator's voice.
