The Creation of South Korean Nonfiction Literary Field:A Study Based on the Creation of"Nonfiction Contest Column"in the Journal ShinDongA
The"Nonfiction Contest Column",founded in 1964 by the South Korean journal ShinDon-gA,was the first platform to promote nonfiction literary creation in South Korea.Existing re-search on the relationship between this column and the field of nonfiction literature has predomi-nantly focused on narrative and background analysis of award-winning works, lacking detailed,"fine-grained"studies based on the various sections of the column. This study reveals that the"Award-Winning Works"section reconstructs three wars in the 20th Century from diverse per-sonal perspectives, reflecting the"contemporaneity"of nonfiction writing materials. The"Panel's Commentary"section highlights misconceptions in nonfiction writing, outlining the ethical con-siderations of"authenticity","objectivity","simplicity"and"depth."The"Award Acceptance Speeches"section showcases the various civilian identities of the authors, contributing to the cre-ation of South Korean nonfiction literary fields for civilian subjects in the 1970s.This column challenged the literary hegemony of elite literature, underscoring the significant role of nonfic-tion literature in expressing the values and demands of ordinary people amidst social change, and offering new possibilities for historical reconstruction.
