Dynamic Development of Oral Fluency of Chinese EFL Learners
This study, based on Complex Dynamic Systems Theory, employed a mixed-method re-search design to investigate the heterogeneity of oral fluency's developmental trajectory and its in-fluencing factors in 262 Chinese non-English major college students.Additionally,it further ex-plored the longitudinal relation between oral fluency subsystems. The research used growth mix-ture modeling to analyze the data. The results revealed that there were two latent subgroups in learners'speed fluency, namely, the speed-increasing group and the speed-dramatic increasing group. Two latent subgroups were identified in breakdown fluency:the pause-increasing group and the pause-decreasing group. Two latent subgroups were also identified in repair fluency:the fluctuating-increasing group and the stable group. Moreover, foreign language engagement had a positive predictive effect on latent groups of oral fluency. Finally, the study found cooperative and competitive relationships between speech fluency and breakdown fluency. This research provides some pedagogical insights into the development of oral proficiency among university students.
