The Acquisition of Existential Constructions by Chinese EFL Learners From the Perspec-tive of the Bottleneck Hypothesis
The study adopted an acceptability judgment test,a blank-filling test, and a multiple-choice test to investigate the realization of[EPP],[u Num],and[±def]features in different existential constructions. Results support the Bottleneck Hypothesis.[u Num]and[±def]features are more difficult to realize than the syntactic feature[EPP].Meanwhile, the realization of the[u Num]fea-ture also exhibits differences in various existential constructions, with the difficulty hierarchy from low to high being there+be<there+unaccusative verbs<there+raising verbs<there+passive verbs. The realization of the[+def]feature is also more challenging than that of the[-def]feature.It is argued that syntactic computation complexity, feature property, and input fre-quency impact feature realization.
