Effects of Phrasal Length on Noun Phrase Frequency in Spoken English Among Learners Across EFL Proficiency Levels
EFL learners'use of language input to produce noun phrases merits attention.Employing the texts retold by 169 English learners after listening to a story,this article explores how EFL proficiency and phrasal length influence the frequency of noun phrases.The noun phrases in-clude the phrases identical to and different from those in the story.A mixed effects model analy-sis revealed the main and interaction effects of EFL proficiency and phrasal length on the fre-quency of noun phrases.In the frequency of identical noun phrases,the EFL proficiency effect was significant for the contrasts of both the low-intermediate and the low-high proficiency groups,whilst significant disparities were observed across varying lengths of noun phrases,demon-strating an interaction effect between phrasal length and EFL proficiency.With regard to differ-ent noun phrases,the influence of EFL proficiency and phrasal length on the noun phrase fre-quency was weakened,and the interaction effect was observed only in the frequencies of two-word and multi-word noun phrases between the low and high proficiency groups.These findings provide valuable insights into how EFL learners employ noun phrases from language input.
