On the Disability Writing and Its Ethical Implications in Carson McCullers' Novels

摘要
残疾书写是麦卡勒斯小说的重要主题之一,是众多学者关注的焦点,然而残疾表征下深层次的现实内涵仍有待挖掘.本文以麦卡勒斯小说《心是孤独的猎手》《伤心咖啡馆之歌》和《金色眼睛的映像》为研究对象,以残疾研究理论为框架,从生理残疾、认知残疾和心理残疾三个层面,剖析作品中残疾书写的呈现方式,探讨残疾背后深刻的伦理内涵,传达麦卡勒斯对旧美国南方社会痼疾的批判.研究表明,麦卡勒斯通过塑造在生理、认知和心理上有残疾的人物,探究了二战后美国南方社会的边缘群体所处的生存困境,描写了残疾人物的悲剧结局,赋予了残疾人物多样的审美价值,并通过人物的病态隐喻社会的病态,揭示了社会的无序和失调.
Abstract
In the works of Carson McCullers,many characters are endowed with characteristics of dis-ability,and the portrayal of disability is one of the essential themes in McCullers' novels and the focus of many scholars.However,the realistic connotation of disability representation remains to be explored.By selecting McCullers' three novels:The Heart is a Lonely Hunter,The Ballard of the Sad Café and Reflections in a Golden Eye as research subjects,this paper,based on the theo-ries of disability study,attempts to analyze the presentation of disability writing in the novels from three aspects:physical disabilities,cognitive disabilities and psychological disabilities,to explore the profound ethical implications behind disability,and to convey McCullers' criticism of the chronic diseases of the old southern society.McCullers portrays characters with disabili-ties in terms of physiology,cognition,and psychology to reveal the existential plight of society after World War Ⅱ.She depicts the tragic endings of disabled characters,endowing them with di-verse aesthetic values,and through the pathological metaphors of the characters,she reveals the disorder and disarray of society.
