Unit of Analysis of Chinese Interlanguage:Syntactically-Oriented vs.Semantically-Orient-ed
Segmenting Chinese interlanguage into units of analysis is crucial for assessing the accura-cy,complexity,and fluency of Chinese as a second language. However, there is currently no con-sensus on how to define an"analytical unit".This paper reviews existing studies on the unit of analysis in Chinese interlanguage, analyzing advantages and limitations of various units and identifying theoretical and methodological issues in current research.Based on the review, the paper proposes that"utterance"should be used as the unit of analysis. It discusses the suitability of this unit in interlanguage and analysis from multiple aspects, including intonation contour, pause, single semantic unit,co-construction,interruption,false start,self-correction,and repeti-tion.The study seeks to construct a more comprehensive framework for analyzing Chinese inter-language.The findings offer new perspectives, ideas, and methods for Chinese interlanguage re-search.
