Change from Tradition:Cultural Reflections on the Intellectuals of the Late Qing Dynasty from the New World Journal
The late Qing Dynasty is an important period of ideological and cultural transformation in modern China.During this period, the New World Journal, edited by Chen Fuchen,a renowned resident of Rui'an,published a large number of academic articles, reflecting the cultural thinking of intellectuals. The journal advocated for the preservation of the quintessence of Chinese culture and Confucianism, and promoted the ideals of Confucianism and the harmonization of Chinese and Western cultures, exemplifying the intellectuals'efforts to dig cultural resources from the tradition and the West in order to revive national culture. In general, their cultural thinking, though original, was not divorced from the traditional framework.Their efforts to distance themselves from existing politics have,to some extent, restricted their cultural speculation, and also reflect that revolutionary ideology and culture have not yet become the mainstream of the society at that time.
