New Insight on the Textual Research of the First Chronicle of Liu Ji's Life
As a renowned minister of his time,Liu Ji's life and deeds were previously limited to his biographical sketch and inscription on gravestones. It is generally believed that the compilation work of A Chronicle of Liu Ji's Life began in the 1930s,with the main works being Wang Xinyi's A Chronicle of Liu Bowen's Life and Liu Yaodong's A Chronicle of Liu Wencheng Gong's Life.Recently,it has been discovered that an even earlier work titled as A Chronicle of Mr.Liu Bowen's Life was compiled by Shi Xiaoxiang.Shi Xiaoxiang's work might have been influenced by the modern construction of chronology in recent times, reflecting a certain theoretical awareness beyond his painting and drawing.Despite the pioneering efforts, this work contains numerous deficiencies when evaluated by today's academic standards.
