The Capability-Based View of Enterprises to Respond to Digital Intelligence Change Paradoxes:Developing Paradox Synergy Capability
Paradoxes persistently reside within organizations,and the digital intelligence change amplifies the existing contradictions and chaos.This highlights the prominence of paradoxical elements or the emergence of diverse paradoxes.Moreover,the process of digital intelligence change is inherently a process of addressing paradoxes,and the differentiated responses to paradoxes engender dual effects of either amplification or attenuation.This underscores the cruciality of effectively managing paradoxes for successful digital intelligence change.While research has already validated the importance of addressing paradoxes within organizations and has explored the management of digital intelligence change paradoxes from the perspectives of attitudes,behaviors,and traditional capabilities,further investigation is needed to delve into the exploration of sustaining the effectiveness of paradox management in the context of digital intelligence change.This paper explores the core question of what capabilities are needed to ensure the sustained coordination of paradoxes in order to effectively drive organizational digital intelligence change.Building upon the examination of paradoxes and their management in the context of digital intelligence change,the concept of paradox synergy capability is proposed from the perspective of dynamic capability,integrating the core features of paradoxes of digital intelligence change and their management.Paradox synergy capability characterizes the capability-based view of responding paradoxes of digital intelligence change,which refers to the capability of an organization to promote the realization of change goals by breaking through organizational established boundaries.It involves engaging in multiple coordination processes of interconnecting and transforming the paradoxical bipolar elements that are formed by the continuous conflict between digital and traditional elements.This paper identifies the two dimensions of paradox synergy capability while precisely defining its connotation.Specifically,based on managing the immersive paradoxes formed by the breaking of established organizational boundaries,and the expansive paradoxes formed by proactive crossing of established organizational boundaries,the paradox synergy capability can be divided into two dimensions,namely,internal immersive paradox synergy capability and external extension paradox synergy capability.Meanwhile,this paper explores the impact of paradox synergy capability on the effectiveness of digital intelligence change,including digital intelligence business transcendence,organizational structure change and digital intelligence performance.Furthermore,this paper provides prospects for future research in four aspects.First,there is a need to further validate the effectiveness of the concept and dimensions of paradox synergy capability.Second,on this basis,it is important to examine the promotion mechanism and process mechanism of paradox synergy capability on digital intelligence change.Third,exploring the cultivation mechanism of paradox synergy capability at different levels,such as the organizational level,the employee level,and the technological level.Fourth,conducting cross-level research on paradox synergy capability.The theory contributions of this paper are as follows:Firstly,this paper directs the attention towards the context of digital intelligence change and identifies the underlying principles and core characteristics that give rise to paradoxes in this process.This lays the groundwork for constructing targeted capabilities to address the paradoxes of digital intelligence change and further deepen the research on paradoxes.Secondly,different from existing research that explores the management of paradoxes in digital intelligence change from the perspectives of attitudes,behaviors,and traditional capabilities,this paper incorporates the essential requirements of boundary openness and sustained coordination in paradox management into a dynamic capability framework,proposing the concept of paradox synergy capability and further deepening the research on paradox management in the era of digital intelligence.Lastly,it demonstrates the impact of paradox synergy capability on multiple concepts related to digital intelligence change,expanding the research on digital intelligence change from a capability perspective.Simultaneously,it aims to provide theoretical guidance for facilitating effective implementation of organizational digital intelligence change.
