Based on the migration experiences of the author Herta Müller,Reisende auf einem Bein narrates the urban roaming journey of the eastern European immigrant Irene in the postmodern metropolis of Berlin. The migration experience places Elena on the borders of the collision of cultural exchange between Eastern and Western Europe thus rendering her identity a mixture of traits. In her journey through the city, the urban space is not only a real world that Irene keeps on exploring, but also an intuitive mapping of her inner world.Private residences, city streets, traffic venues and public areas metaphorically represent the identity crisis with which she is faced when experiencing cultural conflicts. As Irene is always wandering between the center and edges of the city, the marginal stance granted by the migration identity enables her to acquire an open and inclusive cognitive approach to build the edgeland such as the refugee camp and second hand trading market as the third space which are traversable and disruptive. In this space, the cultural hegemony of capitalism is dissolved, the subjectivity of marginalized groups regains attention and Irene's independent and autonomous subject identify is also constructed.
