The oil industry in the Republic of the Congo officially started in the 1950s,and then rapidly developed into a pillar industry in the 1960s and 1980s.However,the development of its oil industry was ham-pered by political unrest in the 1990s.Since the 21st century,the Congolese government has been committed to increasing oil production and strengthening environmental supervision,which has promoted the revitalization of the petroleum industry.The dominance of western oil companies and serious corruption are the major challen-ges faced by Congo's petroleum industry.Congo needs to strengthen its independent exploitation capacity and anti-corruption efforts to achieve sustainable development of the petroleum industry.
