"Exile"and"Return"——Taking the Narrative Function of"Garden"in the Peony Pavilion as the Point of Observation
As the synonym of"home","garden"in"Peony Pavilion"is not purely"symbolic represen-tation space",but bears a certain narrative function, which is manifested as the"exile-return"narrative mode with"home"space as the core. However,we should also distinguish the difference in the philosophical fulcrum of Chinese and Western literary theory, and we need to localize this narrative mode. The analysis of the narrative meaning of"garden"will involve problems like space and power, space and gender, space and exist-ence,which have been discussed by predecessors. Therefore, picking out the"garden"as the observation point has the effect of one total. The garden is a resistance to patriarchal discourse,an escape from the space of obe-dience,and a means to naturalize human nature. In the"Garden",the"Heterotopia",Li Niang realized the life experience from"exile"to"return",and returned to the"home"to complete the confirmation of individual freedom.
