3S technique was used to study the land use/cover changes of the West-marching Comprehensive Protection Project of the West Lake in Hangzhou. The results indicated that the area of virgin soil, construction land and farming land decreased in the west part of the West Lake; area of lawn, forest and waters increased. Ecosystem services value of the west part from 421. 15 million yuan RMB per year to 1 095. 59 million yuan per year, altogether increased 674. 44 million yuan per year, with an increment of 160. 14%. The study proved that the West-marching Comprehensive Protection Project optimized the ecological environment and the social environment during 2001 - 2008, and realized the sustainable development of the region.
