Influences of Illumination on the Seedling Growth and Photosynthetic Characteristics of Understory Ardisia gigantifolia
In order to find suitable growing environments for Ardisia gigantifolia, seedling growth and photosynthetic characters of the plants in different light conditions were examined.Three levels of light transmittance were set up with triplicates: 20.2% (L1) ,7.6% (L2) ,and 4.0% (L3).The results demonstrated that growth indices decreased with transmittance, such as seedling height, ground diameter, stem, leaf and total dry weights, total leaf area, net photosynthetic rate, light compensation point, light saturation point, and light respiration rate, in which differences were very significant or significant except for seedling height.Influences of different light levels on root dry weight, root cap ratio, and maximum net photosynthetic rate were in the order of L1>L3>L2 with were very significant or significant differences. The apparent quantum yield was in the order of L3>L1>L2 with significant differences among treatments. It was concluded after comprehensive consideration that understory environment with 20.2% light transmittance was the optimal condition for the growth of A.gigantifolia seedlings.
