Effects of Giant Panda Herbivory on the Clonal Regeneration of Bashania fargesii Population
Bashania fargesii is an important food resource for giant panda occurring in the Qinling Mountains, giant panda herbivory is the main factor influencing the regeneration of B.fargesii population. In order to reveal the effects of giant panda herbivory on the clonal regeneration of B.fargesii,8 paired of herbivory(naturally grazed by giant pandas)and control(non-grazed by giant pandas)plots were set up in the Foping Nature Reserve to compare the clonal regeneration dynamics of B.fargesii.The results showed that 1)herbivory plots had more abundant shoots and higher rate of degraded shoots than control plots, and the shoots in herbivory plots were thinner than control plots;2)the percentage of bamboo culm form-ing in herbivory plots was lower than that in control plots, but the annual supplementary rate of adult baboo was higher than that in control plots. The basal diameter and height of new bamboo were lower than those in control plots. These results indicate that giant panda herbivory can improve the clonal regeneration of B.fargesii, but reduce the quality of shoots and new bamboo. Our study elucidate the effects of giant panda herbivory on the regeneration of B.fargesii, which is of great significance for conservation and management of the giant panda.
