A Historical Study on Interracial Communication and Culture Integration:Reflections Based on the Study of the Mythology of Ma Changshou
The ethnographic approach of ethnology in the first half of the twentieth century, which combines both diachronic and synchronic studies, has independent theoretical significance for nation-building in China. The historical narratives involved are not only crucial to articulating the legitimacy of nation-building,but may also in fact be counterproductive to nation-building.Howto reconcile this contradiction in research methodology is a question worth pondering. In view of this,The article analyses Ma Changshou's mythological research in an attempt to reveal how he explains the mechanism of cultural mixing by understanding the journey of ethnic migration and inter-ethnic interaction. The purpose of this paper is,on the one hand,to demonstrate the internal logic of the methodology used in his specific research, and on the other hand,to reveal the significance of this methodology in understanding the compatibility of the Republican-era ethnography's argument for pluralistic ethnicity and one nation.
