Under the Shadow of the House Holder:Rereading C.P.Fitzgerald and Francis L.K.Hsu's Dali Studies
After rereading C.P.Fitzgerald's The Tower of Five Glories and Francis L.K.Hsu's Under the Ancestors'Shadow,two early works on Chinese anthropology,this paper analyzes the different orientations of the two scholars in the study of Dali in Southwest China,and attempts to integrate the research results of the two scholars to provide a comprehensive understanding of Dali society,including economy,social structure,and cultural tradition.Based on field revisits and textual rereadings,the different expressions of the two works in the perspective of the family house and the community are clarified,the vitality of the field prompts us to constantly amend our understanding of local society,and the understanding of tradition is the prerequisite for our in-depth understanding of cultural contact and change.
