A Discussion on the Oral Tradition in the View of the Chinese Classical Literature
The original meaning of literature included both written and oral traditions, and even fieldwork was advocated by the classical construction of the humanities. However,in the Chinese canon tradition, where Confucian classics and historical texts are regarded as the highest standards, the oral tradition has always been secondary.Over time,it has increasingly been relegated to less significant categories of literary genres. This has posed numerous challenges for the historical study of folk literature. To address these challenges, researchers need to adopt more targeted strategies, such as employing typological approaches to transcend the hierarchy of literature, being fully aware of both the positive and negative impacts of literati's analyses of folk literature, and so on.More in-depth discussions are needed on how to establish a specialized philology that aligns with the characteristics of folk literature.
