The Relevance between Alkaline α-Galactosidase Activity and Seed Desiccation Tolerance of Maize Seeds at Early Stage of Geremination
Four maize inbred lines with different drought resistance were chosen to investigate the potential relevance between alkaline α-Galactosidase activity and seed desiccation tolerance after imbibition. The results showed that drought-tolerant lines Ji853,E28 and H21 had higher AGA activities than drought-susceptible line B73 at almost all the imbibition time.AGA activities of these four inbred lines showed a trend of ups and downs at the whole geremination stage and AGA activities of these four inbred lines reached peak value when imbibition time was 24 h.Seed vigour, embryo length and radical length of drought-tolerant lines Ji853,E28 and H21 were significant higher than B73 after imbibition, desiccation and rehydration and seed vigour, embryo length and radical length decreased gradually with the increase of imbibition time.O2 (-.) mass fraction reached peak value after imbibition for 24 h and desiccation for 24 h and seed vigour reached minimum at the same imbibition time.Correlation analysis showed AGA activity was significantly and negatively correlated with desiccation tolerance (seed vigour, embryo length and radical length) (P<0.01).
